Top five trekking places near Mumbai

Do you think that packing your bags for a trekking trip is the most exciting way of enjoying the rainy season? There is nothing more magical and mystical than climbing high on the mist-laden peaks of Sahyadri. Amazingly, Mumbai has a plethora of such places. Here are the best five!

Test your trekking temperament at the historical Fort Mahuli
Breathtakingly beautiful surroundings, inconceivable opportunities, hiking of moderate to high levels of difficulty are the signature characteristics of Mahuli. No wonder it is called the paradise for adventure seekers. Those who want to taste the thrill of adrenaline rush must not miss the mountain complex. Mahuli is the tallest point in Thane district. The thick forest area surrounding the hill is a wildlife sanctuary.

Mahuli Fort has got the status of a protected monument due to its historical significance. Pinnacles of ultimate heights and valleys with exhilarating depths make it one of the most thrilling trekking points near Mumbai.  To reach there, get down at Asangaon railway station and catch a bus or hire a rickshaw to the base village.

Karnala, the Funnel Hill
As you reach around 10 kilometers from Panvel, you will see the peak of Karnala Hills, a place of tactical importance in the historical times. Karnala Fort was the checkpoint for the way connecting the Konkan base to the rest of the Maharashtra.  Today, the lush green forest has been declared as a bird sanctuary.  Karnala Fort is a trekking bliss for all. There are places with moderate to high difficulty levels. It is a perfect place for group trekking.

Tungareshwar, tough terrains with vivid beauty make it different
Trekking in a dense forest at the altitude of 2100 feet is implausibly enchanting!  The mesmerism of Tungareshwar is incomparable throughout the year, but Monsoon takes it to an ultimate level of ecstasy.  Right from the Highway Junction (the starting point at the base) you traverse through a three kilometers track and reach Tungareshwar Temple. There are two splendid trekking choices after this point. The first one takes you at the highest point on a trek of 8 kilometers.  Another one is a true jungle trek that ends with a spectacular view of the Chincholi Waterfall.

Rajmachi
When you think about breathtaking trekking spots near Mumbai, it is impossible to forget Rajmachi. It is an adored trekking spot with phenomenal surroundings.   Lush green surroundings and amazing waterfalls don’t let you feel exhausted or worn-out. There are two forts at the peak Manoranjan and SriVardhan that open the unseen pages of the splendid Maratha History.  Those who love Sahyadri range of mountains must not miss it.

Vikatgad Fort, a place for seasoned trekkers only
If you aren’t an experienced trekker, then it is not the right place for you. As the name suggests, it offers tough terrains and difficult turns. It takes more than 6 hours to reach the top. However, it is an awesome experience to view startlingly spectacular peaks after climbing a challenging trail.
