Just because we said that it is a Vegetarian Crocodile it does not mean you can pet it. The crocodile is still a wild amphibian and will snap your arm off but might just not chew it.
This unusual crocodile named babiya resides in the temple lake of Ananthapura Temple in Kasargode, Kerala and is considered the guardian of this temple. It is said that the current guardian crocodile suddenly appeared over 70 years ago when the previous crocodile protecting the temple died. The legend goes that when the guardian crocodile dies, a new crocodile takes its place automatically. The temple is centuries old and at any given time only one crocodile can be seen in this river hence the belief.
Age old stories tell us about a guardian crocodile that was shot dead by a British soldier but to the amazement of the devotees, another guardian crocodile appeared and took over guard duties. The soldier was rumored to have died due to a snake bite shortly after.
The current guardian crocodile is over 70 years old and is said to be a harmless & pure vegetarian amphibian that does even kill and eat the fishes in the lake. The crocodile is fed Prasad called payasam (mix of rice & jiggery) after the puja at noon. The crocodile comes on time and waits patiently for the puja to get over and then eats the Prasad given by the priests. Temple devotees too feed the crocodile the Prasad they get from the temple. Once fed, the crocodile swims back to the cave nearby. This crocodile turns up every day to be fed without fail.
